Storm Prediction Center
The Storm Prediction Center (SPC), located in Norman, Oklahoma, is tasked with forecasting the risk of convective severe weather in the contiguous United States. The agency issues convective outlooks, mesoscale discussions, and watches as a part of this process. Watches are issued when forecasters are confident that severe weather will occur, and usually precede the onset of severe weather by one hour.
National Weather Service
The National Weather Service (NWS) is tasked with providing "weather, hydrologic, and climate forecasts and warnings for the United States, its territories, adjacent waters and ocean areas, for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy." This is done through a collection of national and regional centers, and 122 local weather forecast offices (WFOs).
National Severe Storms Labratory
The National Severe Storms Laboratory (or NSSL) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather research laboratory located at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma. NSSL investigates all aspects of severe weather to improve severe weather warnings and forecasts in order to save lives and reduce property damage.
United States Geological Survey
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is a scientific agency of the United States government. The scientists of the USGS study the landscape of the United States, its natural resources, and the natural hazards that threaten it. The organization has four major science disciplines, concerning biology, geography, geology, and hydrology.
Center For Severe Weather Research
The Center For Severe Weather Research (CSWR), is a non-profit research organization located in Boulder, Colorado, funded primarily by the National Science Foundation (NSF), with close collaborations with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the Pennsylvania State University. The CSWR scope includes The Doppler On Wheels (DOW), Bistatic Network, and Rapid-Scan programs.
American Meteorological Society
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) promotes the development and dissemination of information and education on the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences and the advancement of their professional applications.
National Center for Atmospheric Research
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) conducts collaborative research in atmospheric and Earth system science, encompassing meteorology, climate science, atmospheric chemistry, solar-terrestrial interactions, environmental and societal impacts, and more. A nongovernmental institute, the center is based in Boulder, Colorado, USA at the Mesa Laboratory.
University Corporation for Atmospheric Research
The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research promotes partnership in a collaborative community dedicated to understanding the atmosphere, the air around us, and the complex processes that make up the Earth system, from the ocean floor to the Sun's core.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce focused on the conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere. NOAA warns of dangerous weather, charts seas and skies, guides the use and protection of ocean and coastal resources, and conducts research to improve understanding and stewardship of the environment.
Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network
The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network (CoCoRaHS) is a unique, non-profit, community-based network of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow). By using an interactive Web-site, the aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications.
